julien donkey-boy [watching]
"julien donkey-boy", the last dogme film available on netflix. hmm.. this is the worst dogme film so far. i really didn't like this one. the director also made "gummo", another film i didn't like. i think it must be the white trash aspect. it's simply nothing i can relate to or have a desire to watch.
the best way for me to describe julien is to say it's like a filmic music concrete or loop/remix. in that respect, i find the film interesting. but it's not enough to hold my attention for the entire film. this sort of style works best for me as a shorter piece. i haven't yet seen a film that does this well for longer lengths.
the director didn't want a lovable schizophrenic as the main character, he wanted it real, like his uncle. it was just too much for me. the character really annoyed me. i love the actor as spud in "trainspotting" and such, but as julien it was just too nails on chalkboard. i like the filmmaker's ideas but i don't know if i like how they are executed. so far, i think that he likes to throw a bunch of 'out there' characters on the screen and mix them up a bit just to see what happens. i think i need to see a lot more of his work to suss out his possibilities as a filmmaker.
i really like chloe sevigny. she has amazing presence, but i couldn't get into this character she played. my dream is to remake the adaptation of ayn rand's "the fountainhead" with chloe as dominique. the adaptation from 1949 is crap. most film adaptations are crap but i think "the fountainhead" could be a really great film. i seriously doubt this will ever happen but if i want to make it come true, i have to start cracking my ass on filmmaking skills.
