hello, my name is johnny [watching]
when i first bought a dvd player a couple of years ago, i bought a set of superbit dvds at costco so that i could start to build up a collection and to have movies to watch that i am not normally into, so that there would be more of a variety when guests visit. included with the collection was "johnny mnemonic". i tried to watch it when i first bought it but fell asleep halfway through. tonight i tried once again to watch it. i got sleepy again. the pace of the film feels at least 3x slower than what it really is. it just drags.
it's hard to believe that a william gibson based film directed by robert longo could be so horrible, but don't forget who is cast in the lead. the only time i wasn't bored out of my mind was a scene with beat takeshi. one of his chinpira types was talking to him in japanese and it was horrible--i couldn't understand a word. at that moment, takeshi told him to speak english because his japanese was so bad that he couldn't understand him. i laughed out loud at that one. after that, there was nothing enjoyable.
this viewing confirmed it, i'm going to get rid of this dvd. but this viewing has also made me realize that i need to read gibson's other books as soon as i get the chance. i have only read "neuromancer" but have a lot of other books in the reading queue before i can get to the rest of the sprawl trilogy.
