so that was the film [watching]

a friend let us borrow "broadcast news" just because she loves it and said we should watch it. what she didn't know is that watching it would be somewhat of a life experience for me.

i know this is crazy but i have 3 film scenes from i think 3 different films that are stuck in my head. these are childhood memories and i don't know what films they are from.

1. young kids, probably in high school, some are being mean to one, a nerdy type. the nerd tells them that they will only make $20,000 a year, they laugh thinking that's pretty good. i was watching this with my aunt and asked her if it was good or not. she said it's not good.

film: "broadcast news"! it occurs within the first 5 minutes of the film. i was so excited to see the scene because after all these years, i was starting to think that i had made these up, or that my memory was severely wrong about the scenes. i'm really surprised that it was this movie, given the year it was released. it was released in 1987 and i thought the scenes in question were from films from 1983-1984, around that period. i saw the film with my aunt on video. i moved to japan in the summer of 1987. that means that "broadcast news" went to video fairly quickly for the 1980s. i remember films in the 1980s taking 1 year to get released onto video. or maybe it just felt like 1 year because i was a kid.

2. this scene memory is very vague but i feel that it is a stephen king type of film, it has that vibe about it. the male character, a christopher walken or john lithgow type, is psychic and he is either tormented by it or uses it to solve crimes. it's a very vague memory. the main thing i remember is that he looks at a fish bowl which triggers a psychic flash that something bad will happen to his family and i think the bowl breaks. or maybe it's just a plain glass. i think it's a place where it snows and he's bundled up at home. it's all very vague i know but once day i'm going to find this film. recently i talked about this with a friend and decided to look up stephen king films from the early 1980s. perhaps this is from "the dead zone"? i don't know. i'm not familiar with stephen king's work because i never got into it. one day i'll rent this film.

3. another film i watched with my aunt. a man grows up. when he's in college, he has sex with his girlfriend in the bushes. he's a writer. a girlfriend he has rips up/throws away into the wind his manuscript. later in life, he's married. i was just a kid so i was too embarrassed to ask if his wife is the girl he fucked in the bushes so i was a real pest with my aunt and kept bugging her to ask if the wife is the girl who ripped up the manuscript. i asked that so many times, i wanted to slap myself. for some reason, i feel like maybe robin williams was the main character but probably not. i also discussed this scene with a friend and a very wild guess is "the world according to garp". other than that, i have no idea what film it could be.
