21 grams [watching]

today i saw "21 grams". i enjoyed the non-linear nature simply because it is not the dominant method of unraveling narrative. nothing against the film itself, however, i cannot help but wonder if the film is enjoyable simply because of the narrative method. is it the desire to figure out the chronological order of events that is the main or only tie of the viewer to the film? the very nature of the non-linear method forces viewer engagement because the viewer must put the pieces that are presented together. would the narrative be as interesting if it were linear? are we so over-saturated by linear narratives that we will enjoy just about any story as long as it is non-linear? perhaps if "21 grams" were linear, it would have been overdramatic--a modern melodrama?
