the crying of lot 49 [learning]

there is a lot of down time when using final cut pro. there are moments when the software is busy and the user is waiting. those moments are a great time to read. i can see how a small-time filmmaker could be very literate. i used those down moments as an opportunity to read "the crying of lot 49" by thomas pynchon, which we have to read for class. i'm not sure how to describe how i feel about the book because i'm not even sure what i feel! it's not hate and it's not love. since i was reading the book in a series of short spurts while rendering footage, etc., i feel a bit displaced and confused as to the characters and what was going on. i need to read it a couple more times and take some notes. though even if i had read it straight through, given the author's style, i'm sure i would not be much clearer. i feel a bit like a deer in headlights. there is a part of me that is mesmerized. i am glad that we had to read it because i had been wanting to read some of his books and they're even on my amazon wishlist. that wishlist is really a reminder to myself of things i need to read, to watch, to listen to. i definitely have to read one of pynchon's other books soon.

now that i think about my reaction to the book, i can draw a parallel to the film "mulholland dr.". i felt quite similar after watching the film for the first time. the more i watch the film, the more i begin to piece together the puzzle clues and the more i like the film. i think this book will be the same way. i look forward to the re-readings.
