sleep is a foreign concept [learning]
after the in class review of our film on wednesday, i have begun to see the project in a new light. i was thinking of making a short film. that was the wrong approach. this film is only 3-5 minutes. i was thinking slower shots, more cinematic. i had an 18 minute film and i wasn't done yet. at that rate my film would've been about 30 minutes long. that's a short film but that's not our project. i didn't have time to shorten it. i took the footage to class. after reviewing other works. there was not time to show mine, which was great. i went home and spent all night quickly chopped together a 5-6 minute piece that lost a lot of the story, interesting film angles, jokes, etc. this is what i showed to the class today.
now that i've distanced myself from the long version, i am able to think of the short version in a new light. i imagine it as a commercial. a commercial does not have time for character development. sometimes you use a stereotype because that's the most effective way to communicate a lot of information in a short period. this new way of thinking has helped me to rethink the project and reshape the story. this requires additional filming. i still need the very beginning and very end to shoot anyway, so why not redo the middle?
i didn't have very much time to reconceive the role of the pet owner but i thought of something and reshot it on the spot tonight. the pet has been dropped so let's just call the character "the tenant who had a bad day". the pet aspect will appear in the web version because it will allow interaction and one point of my web version is for the user to interact with the narrative. tomorrow morning/afternoon i am reshooting the office manager assistant scenes, now known as the building superintendent. then in the afternoon/evening i will be shooting the pickup shots for the game designer.
