dr. mosh [listening]
wow. what an amazing show last night. by the time i got home it was 4am, which is not bad. i immediately went to sleep! here is what i can recall.
after work my friend picked me up and she brought with her things that i asked her to bring: my camera, extra film, cd inserts, etc. however, she forgot to bring my hard to find tecnopal album. ah! this was the pre-victimas band and early versions of the songs are on the record. oh well, i know i will see victimas again. i don't think i'll get another chance to see plastilina mosh.
the club was small, more like a bar/lounge that has a small stage for live music and a dance floor for those that want to shake their hips. in fact, the marquee didn't even mention the show. it listed salsa dancing and such but no concert. when we drove by, there were perhaps 10 people already waiting. we quickly found a spot to park. by the time we walked to the club, there were a lot more people in that blurred concert line sense so it's hard to estimate. perhaps 30. as we waited and waited, more friends of those in line arrived and i'd say we got pushed back about 20 spots. the doors did not open at 8pm like they were supposed to. one of the cars that passed by was a white van and i swear jonas from p-mosh was in the passenger seat. the only distinguishing thing i could see about the person was a light bracelet with green or blue lines on it. that was what i was going to look for on stage to find out if it was him or not. after a very long wait, they eventually started to let people in. but a horrible thing happened. a bus arrived, not a city bus or a musician touring bus, but more like a tourist bus. they were letting the people from the bus into the club first. since it was a rock en español show, you can be sure those in line did not like it and voiced their opinion with plenty of obscenities.
when we were let in, i was relieved to see that no one had started lining up around the stage. (perhaps because a crap opener was on stage.) i took this opportunity to use the restroom. there was a small merchandise booth that had victimas shirts and signed posters. *mental note* do not forget to buy a poster. my friend did not feel up to dealing with being at the front of the stage so i hung out on the dance floor, waiting to grab a spot by the stage but not wanting to seem too eager. my friend was going to hang out on the balcony, which was a perfect spot to video tape. it was too loud to hear her, i thought she said she would buy a poster now instead of after. too bad she didn't, after the show they were completely sold out. didn't even have any copies to sell at the remaining shows.
the stage was quite small and there was a small cut-in area. i don't know what else to call it. there was a small table and chair there. eventually i got tired of waiting and sat down there. then people started hanging around that area too. good thing i was first! after a couple of hours of the club acting as a dance club, i pushed aside the table and chair because plastilina mosh had taken the stage! the audio of the club was beyond crap but it was great to see them in such an intimate setting. if i wanted to lick jonas's shoe, i could've. that's how close i was. i felt like a professional concert photographer. what was nice about the show was that it was just the two of them. not many were gathered around so it felt like seeing them during their early days. what was not good was that it was only two of them. it would've been nice if they had a live drummer to make their sound more full. i was going to take 2 rolls of p-mosh and 2 rolls of victimas but i went slightly over 2 rolls for p-mosh.
p-mosh started off with "human disco ball". then they did something amazing: they played three of my favorite songs in a row. "niño bomba", "afroman", "mr. p-mosh". their sound was tight. there was no set list. they would just walk up to each other to discuss what to play next. from my angle, i could not tell how big rosso's keyboard was. it was the size of a coffin! jonas was wearing a light yellow bracelet with red/green/etc stripes. it was hard to tell exactly what it was but it just confirmed that i did see him in the van.
other songs they played included "banano's bar", "peligroso pop", etc. once they finished, my friend came down from the balcony and decided to hang out with me since the crowd wasn't so bad. the crew was cleaning up and i saw a green pick on stage. i saw jonas was using a green pick but i didn't see what he did with it. it must've been his so i asked for it. yay, they gave it to me.
victimas is crazy though so we did have to do a little fighting, but all in all it wasn't bad. their performance was like a halloween circus. the roadies had an intense job to do. they were filming, etc. but no matter what they were doing, their primary concern was the safety of the band. victimas jumps around constantly. if a mic cable gets in the way, if a drink falls over, the roadies immediately stop what they're doing and clean up the mess. there was a set list taped right next to my friend for the guitarist. i'd say after the first song it was in shreds. that's how wild their shows are. after awhile of getting knocked around, i finished up my rolls and put my glasses away. screw watching the show in perfect 20/20, it's time to get serious! i was ready to fight anyone who would get in my way. amazingly, no one did. one guy did manage to run right past me on the stage. i reached to grab his leg to pull him off (ya know, to help out the roadies who were doing the same) but he went by too quickly and i couldn't even get a grip.
during one of the songs, i don't know why it happened, but abulon (the singer) came right up to me. he was on his knees and he patted my head. i don't know if he was starting to fall and he saved face by doing that move or what. it was cool though. after the show my friend remarked that it seemed like abulon knew me when he did that move, kind of like this one time budgie turned and gasped when he saw me at a creatures show.
after victimas finished, we asked for the only pristine set list left: the drummer's. they gave that one to us too, yay. or as japanese would say, "luck-y". on the way out of the club i asked a security man if i could have a ticket as a souvenir. i explained that they took the tickets from us and now that the show's over, i would like to have one as a memory. (they looked really nice) he said i'd have to ask someone else. oh well, i went to my car to put away the rolls i had taken and to grab a fresh roll. we hung out for 30 minutes and most everyone had left except for the crew. the security guy saw me and gave me 2 tickets to keep. super lucky! i noticed a van that had jcf.com on it and since they manage victimas, i knew they would leave in that van. we hung out there. then the p-mosh van pulled up and they started loading gear. it looks like we'll get to meet p-mosh first!
next thing ya know, abulon walks by and i call out to him to sign my cd inserts. more like i motioned to him since i can't speak spanish. quickly i found out he speaks english pretty well so i was glad we were able to communicate. the things he said would have made you cry. he kissed our asses, thanking us for coming to the show. he swears he recognizes me at every show, in the front, seriously contemplating the music and he likes that in a fan. there must be some other crazy caucAsian running around their shows because this was only the 3rd time i've seen them and only my 2nd time in the front. it's hard to find information about victimas and even harder for me due to the language barrier. so i learned a lot talking to him. the kind of music they like, the side project he had, ranas' side project, etc. at one point ranas stopped by and he talked to us too. more like i just nodded now and then since he doesn't speak english. i told him one day i will learn spanish and he said the same for him and english! hahahaaa my friend apologized profusely for forgetting to bring the tecnopal record.

after victimas left, we waited an additional 30 minutes and then the p-mosh van left and the club closed for good. i guess while we were busy chatting with victimas we missed our p-mosh opportunity. that's ok, it was a a great night. i can't wait to see how the pictures turn out.
