i'm a beautician not a magician [living]

ok, i'm not a beautician. but i have read that line on a pin a beautician was wearing. my mom has her license and i used to go product shopping with her. she had a mini salon in the garage when i was in high school. every month i'd go to her for a dye and a shave. yeah, that's back when i used to shave part of my head. i've never studied how to cut hair, i just feel like i get the basic theory of it from growing up with my mom knowing how to. sometimes i cut my friends' hair. i've always wanted to cut a guy's hair but never had, until today.

today my friend and i held a mini "queer eye for the straight guy" session. our friend dani was the victim, er volunteer. we didn't do anything major, just evened out the cut he already had and made it spicier. first though, we looked at the products he uses. pretty much hippy crap and dog shampoo. we let him keep his hippy soap but made him throw out the dogpoo, gel, and hairspray. the boy uses soap on his face and no lotion. we got him some proper face wash and lotion. simple stuff you can find in any store. he complained about thin hair that doesn't style or hold. we went to a salon and bought some volumizing shampoo and conditioner. i wanted him to understand the product so i went for the name "amplify". honey, that's got to work!

for the cut, i used two kinds of scissors and an electric to give an evenness in the back and jaggedness in the front. (he wanted to have "rock star hair".) then i made him put on a cap for streaking, which he was against, bleached some strands, then added some red tones. i didn't expect the red to stick too deeply this time but the bleaching should give him the foundation for some nice streaks. after all that, we gave him another product: molding paste. he was excited because he had been wanting to try it. bottom line: he loved his cut and loves to paste. (i'm allowed to make geek jokes, right?) in fact, he was so pleased he kept the streaking cap. i just hope he doesn't start wearing it to the grocery store like an old lady!
