cho revolution [living]
margaret cho kicks ass! i went to go see her last night at the flint center in cupertino (san jose). when looking at concert listings, i would often see the flint center listed but i never knew where it was. it always sounded like some big sports venue. it turns out it's a theater at a community college. bizarre that so many should play at community college! but when you see inside, you know why so many perform there. it's a really nice place. it's clean, parking is close, and it's large enough to draw some big names but small enough to still have an intimate feel. it could be a city's performing arts theater.
going to the show, i didn't want to place any expectations on margaret and her jokes other than i wanted to laugh and really enjoy myself. i have been sick of work and really needed comedy relief yesterday. margaret more than delivered. before going to the show, i looked over her site to get some details on what's beene going on. there's a mention of bruce here and there. all i could think was, "who's bruce? her fiancée?" bruce opened up for her and he's gay. i smell a pattern! the very first time i saw margaret and her gay roommate opened up. bruce was funny, he can hold his own, but margaret really has this aura about her. she is probably not known for physical comedy but if you think about, that is her strength. her faces and body language are key elements to her delivery. with this tour, i think margaret has mastered physical delivery. it was amazing. if you've never seen margaret, this is the tour to experience her performance.
margaret also had a great sparkle to her. i notice this sparkle in people when they've come to some sort of equilibrium and happiness that they've never had before. maybe they've gone sober or finally accepted themself and love themself. i can't quite explain it but you run into it every few years. someone will seem a bit sad for years then something changes and they might change. but when there's a big difference, they sparkle. margaret was full of this sparkle and i just felt happy for her on a personal level for achieving whatever it is she has in order to shine as she did. when people have this sparkle, they are beautiful and margaret was quite beautiful on that stage.
overall, i think her material showed her comedic strengths as well as the underlying political message which is coming to the forefront, (the title is revolution!) i like margaret's message and her value system seems similar to mine so that just makes me like her more.
