gina gershon can play guitar... [listening]
...and she proved she knows how to rock out at the "prey for rock n roll" promotional tour appearance in san francisco. i got a much later start than i wanted to drive 'over the hill' but it was an entertaining drive because of a group of motorcyclists who thought they were stunt performers. my friend's heart stopped when one of them popped a wheelie right in front of us--she thought he might fall and we would run smack into him. i parked at an expensive lot but i didn't care because i had to run to a bathroom asap. that's what usually happens to me driving to san francisco. i get some lunch from a drive through fast food joint and by the time i'm in san francisco, all the liquid has processed and i have to use a bathroom.
i arrived at the great american music hall and there wasn't anyone waiting. i figure either we're the only crazy ones who want to see gina arrive or she's already arrived and we missed it. about 5-10 minutes later, gina arrives and she very quickly wants to get in the venue. the first thing i immediately noticed about her is how tiny she is. i thought she would be taller than me but i was the one who was taller. she's also really petite with tiny feet and perfect teeth. anyway, i had her sign some dvd inserts but she didn't let me take my picture with her because "i haven't taken a shower yet". oh well, i understand that feeling but that's not very rock n roll of you gina! hahhaaa if you're gonna rock you've gotta learn to live with the no shower feeling.
there was a small film crew recording her arrival. then they got busier as time went on. it turns out they're filming something for the independent film channel. they even interviewed me several times because i was the first in line. i doubt my answers are interesting enough to air but how strange that i should be interviewed as a fan of gina gershon, of all things! it bothered me a bit that the questions being asked were taking the sexiness angle, how very boring and hollywood! but i let it go because that's how the system is. i guess no one really cares about acting anymore except those in theater. no questions about other members of the crew who created the film and the music. just gina and her sex appeal. there was a delay of getting in the venue due to a bomb threat. it was funny to see even gina's personal assistant shut out and not allowed in the venue. all the waiting just made me hate cigarettes even more. we were thoroughly searched due to the bomb threat, so my camera was confiscated. luckily it was only held for me but i really wanted to take some nice pictures for my friends who couldn't be at the show. once i got into the venue, i immediately went for the front, off center (because dead center is often where the fights occur) to claim my spot.
gina and three members of girls against boys played 10 songs then 3 for the encore. there were at least 2 songs gina wrote, several covers, and the rest were from the film. gina played guitar on almost every song. she used a black fender telecaster (single coil) piped through a marshall jcm 900. i think she only had one effect pedal, probably a delay or reverb, which she never turned off or changed the settings. she didn't shred any solos, just basic courtney love type rhythm chords followed by shove the guitar aside so i can sing holding onto the mic. she definitely has the rock thing down. maybe her high school buddy lenny kravitz showed her some moves. she also played the jew harp a little bit and a couple notes on a keyboard. i think both were not necessary and could have been done on guitar, especially since the mic hardly picked up the jew harp.
it was interesting to note that both the opening band and gina/girls against boys played some songs using a capo on the guitar. i haven't seen anyone do that in years and probably never in concert! most of the songs were on the medium to slower side so my body didn't really feel the rock. i will say though that gina has amazing stage presence, which is probably why she's a great actress. the last two songs were the best. very energetic, lively, rockin' covers of the stooges' "i wanna be your dog" and nancy sinatra's "these boots were made for walking". after the set ended i went to the bathroom for one last hurrah before i hit the road to go home and happened to pass by the drummer and remember his name so i told him they did a great show because they did play a great show. everyone gave it their all and it came off great.
