a touch of iceland [listening]
some friends and i went to see bjork perform in san francisco on the pier. (another friend of ours was out in the crowd, somewhere in front.) i am not fond of large venue concerts, nor being outside, but overall the experience of bjork's performance was the best such a show could be. (however, one of the opening acts was one of the most torturous opening acts i have ever had to sit through.) the musicians were top-notch as was bjork. the selection of songs was good, or at least good for me since she played the songs i wanted to hear. i have been kicking myself ever since i missed her oakland performance a couple years ago and bjork is becoming such a huge star that the likelihood of me ever seeing her in a small venue is extremely slim to none. so i had to make sure i attended the next bay area performance, no matter the venue. while the pier held a much bigger crowd than i prefer, i think bjork recognized that she had to make up for the lack of intimacy somehow. bjork incorporated the use of pyro. yes, pyro--that stage element mostly reserved for metal and seldom used since the 1980s. topping it further, there was fireworks, literally. bjork really took advantage of being outdoors. at first i thought the fireworks were for the nearby baseball game but once i saw that the height of the fireworks was quite low, i realized it was for the concert. merchandise was super pricey but that's alright since i wasn't there for that, i was there for bjork orchestration and it was excellent.
